THE festive joy continued this week for South Mildura with the signing of key forward Sam Basham.

Basham is the third big name to land at the Kennel in recent weeks, joining Mathew Hodge and former Brisbane and Hawthorn-listed player

Hayden Kiel as the club’s other big signings and comes on the back of the announcement of their successful bid to become the tenant club of the new Mildura South sports precinct.

Basham, a 191cm forward, booted 75 goals last season for Victor Harbor in South Australia’s Great Southern Football League.

A close friend of Hodge, Basham will provide the Dogs with a much-needed target up forward and allow club best and fairest Tyler Curtis more freedom to play further up the ground.

The Bulldogs have been aggressive in their recruiting after a poor 2019 season saw them finish on the bottom of the ladder.

But despite the obvious excitement surrounding the recent additions to their playing list, club officials have kept a tight lid on things.

The cautious approach comes on the back of their lack of success last season.

Although no one inside the Dogs’ hierarchy is prepared to go on the record about their new recruits, there is no doubting the quality and depth of players they have been able to add to their list.

Kiel, Hodge and now Basham add leadership, experience and some much-needed class to the line-up.

South will also welcome back Josh Berry from Millewa Football League club Nangiloc and Brayden Wood, who spent some time with Bambill before heading overseas for an extended working holiday.

Berry is expect to hold down one of the key defensive roles for the Dogs.
